A visit to Box Hill on Boxing Day seems like a particularly British thing to do. Box Hill lies in Surrey, one of the Home Counties and thus within easy driving distance of London. From the top of Box Hill, there is an amazing view of the surrounding chalk downland, famous for its butterflies, orchids and, of course, the box trees which give the hill its name.

Surrey remains one of the most heavily forested counties in England, and the views of the countryside from the Salomons Memorial or the higher elevation National Trust car park are superb. Before enjoying a traditional picnic lunch with Surrey escorts on the slopes of Box Hill, one can explore the Weypole Ford across the River Mole or the memorial to Peter Labilliere who was buried head downwards (at his request) in June of 1800 on the western side of Box Hill.
