Not a great showing
Date: 6/22/08 Next Event: VIR

Well I tried to keep my head up heading into and throughout the Mosport event, but there is little to show for a hard working weekend. I spend the entire test day in the car working on the setup. The team has a all-new shock spring package and they have done zero tuning on it. So, needless to say it was a nighmare to drive in the first practice session. It was good that we had alot of practice time for the test day, but it really wore me out driving around a car that was quite honestly scarey.

By the end of the test day we'd picked up about 4 seconds a lap, but still needed 1 more to be really competitive. I was set to not drive the entire next day because my teammate needed the track time and he was going to qualify. So I sat out and helped coach him all day. He'd never been to Mosport, and we didn't have the most confidence inspiring car. So, needless to say our practice times were pretty poor.

So, skip forward to the race. My co-driver had qualified 4rd or 5th from the back and was lapping 3 or 4 seconds a lap slower than the leaders. So, it didn't take long for them to be closing in on the back of him. He was trying to push as hard as he could, and had a couple run-ins with other cars. The entire driver's side of the car was smashed in about 20 minutes into the race and about 40 minutes in the leader is getting close to putting us a lap down. We really needed a caution so that I could get in the car before we loose a lap. Well the caution came, but we couldn't get in contact with our driver to tell him to pit.... turns out the caution was because of him. He was hard into the wall and the car was coming in on a flat bed.

The team rolled the car off the truck and went right to work on it. Replacing what could be replaced quickly and trying to get the car so it would at least run. They wanted me to go back out and finish. So about 16 laps later I was back out on the track with a battered car, limping it around to the finish. The result was not good, but we brought it home, and hopefully I'll get another shot at this. It looks like I may be waiting until the season finale at VIR, but you never know. I'm scheduled to be working for the Compass 360 Racing team the rest of the season, so at least I'll be at the track.
