Well a last minute phone call came in and I was at the track in no time. But not driving a race car, I was hired to be on the crew. The team I drove for last year needed someone to be in charge of the Data on all the cars for last weekends race in Connecticut.
Each time a race car is on the track there is a logging computer onboard that collects all different sorts of data that is happening. It is very usefull for the team in many aspects. Drivers can look at some of the data, decipher it and see how they can do better on the track, the crew chief can decipher the data to see if the car is handling properly, and the engine guy can make sure the engine is healthy and running at maximum potential.
So, the team needed someone to be in charge of the Data, and I had made an impression last year as a driver who was pretty good with the data. I was hired for one race because that's all they said they needed me for. But I have a sneaking suspicion that it is more of a job interview, than a one time need. It is good for me, because I got to go to the track and get paid, and also do a little networking. I am pretty sure I made another good impression with the team. I had multiple team members tell me they hoped I would be back for the whole year. Well, maybe when I can't be in a car, I can be helping to make one go fast.
We'll see what comes of this experience, but I'm already in talks with another team and may end up getting a ride for the next race at Mosport. I'll keep you posted!
