Well the last few races have been tough for us, and this one was not different. But, tough would be an understatement here.
The day started out very well. See, lately we have been fighting a long break petal that we just chalked up to wear and heat, but they guys discovered last night that the brake master cylinder was leaking. So that was why our petal was getting long and soft, that made us feel really good. So I went out in the morning session and did 1 lap, just to bed in our new break pads, and the brake petal felt better than it had in a long time.
Then came qualifying, Travis put in on the front row in 2nd position. We couldn't ask for much more than that. The car was handling awesome, the breaks were finally working great. We had everything going for us, we were really looking forward to a good result.
The start of the race couldn't have gone better. The green drops and Travis is on the outside, the 3rd place car isn't quite able to hang with the leader. So, Travis easily slips in right behind the leader and the plan is to just work together and run away with the race... This is working out perfectly, for about half of a mile. Then comes the first turn, everyone hits their breaks like they are supposed to... except 1 person. Bob Endicott who started 8th was now in 4th, he decided that was not enough positions to make up on the start and goes for a couple more. Greed is an ugly thing. As he brakes later than anyone else he is going too fast to make the corner and plows right into the left rear wheel of Travis's car. This was not a little hit, it totally destroyed the suspension and Travis's left rear wheel was barely being held on. He tried to limp the car around for a couple laps, but he knew it was too bad to drive. He brought it into the garage and we took a look at it and knew our day was done.
