Iowa Speedway is a brand new track, we are the first people to ever race on the road coarse here. It is so tight and slow on the infield that it is going to be very difficult to race on. There really aren't any passing zones here and much of it is just "follow the leader". The banking section though is actually fun because our cars are right at the edge of being able to "go flat" through there. In qualifying people will be doing it flat out, but for the race we will have to back off a little to not destroy the tires.
Today was a pretty good day for us, we didn't really have the fastest lap times today, but our car is setup pretty well. We had 3 practice sessions today, and for the first 2 our anti-lock breaks were not working. So we had to be careful on them so we didn't lock up the tires and flat spot them. We were losing alot of time in the breaking zones, but were really fast through the twisty bits. We were tweaking the setup and have gotten to a point where we are pretty happy now. For the last session today we finally got the abs working, but we didn't want to do alot of laps because we didn't want to put alot of laps on the tires we are going to qualify on.
The word is that over 10,000 tickets were pre-sold for our race tomorrow, so it should be a fun race weather the track is good or not. It is always more fun to race in front of a crowd. Also, I talked with the radio web guy today for a while, and he worked on saying my last name. So, we'll see if he can get it right tomorrow... haha
So we'll see how things play out tomorrow, but I think we have a pretty good car. There are alot of good cars here this weekend though. Our lap times are 51 to 52 seconds, so the shorter laps create a tighter packed field. Alot of people are just a few tenths from being in first place. Travis is qualifying tomorrow and I think he'll do pretty well, we are just a little concerned about how this tight little track will eat up the car. So if we abuse the car early in the race there might not be much left at the end. That's the trick, go fast with out using up the breaks and tires... it's alot harder than it sounds.
The last time I raced on my birthday I won, so we'll see if I can continue the tradition!
