Calm before the season
Date: 2/23/2007 Event: Homestead Miami Speedway

Here's an update on how thing are going. I have signed on with Kensai Racing
co-driving with Travis Walker for the rest of the season. I am excited about the opportunity and think we have a shot at some really strong performances. But, because of our dominating performance at Daytona we have been given a “competition adjustment”. This means that the officials thought that the Acura TSX's had an unfair advantage. So they are making us go back to using a stock cam shaft and also we must use the stock ECU. Basically what this means is that we'll have significantly less horsepower in the car, which was clearly our strong suit at Daytona. Yes we did have a bit of a horsepower advantage, but we were clearly handicapped in the handling department. Of course I don't agree with the adjustment, because when we go to some of the tighter tracks that do not reward horsepower, but reward handling, we will be hurting. So when we go to Homestead we are going to have to work very hard on the car to see if we can get it handling better. We are going to have to do a lot of testing with the car to get it right, but with the team based in Toronto it really isn't an option this time of year.

Also, I've had a lot of people ask my why there is such a long break between races here. let me explain. The traditional race season is actually the summer. Like many other sports though, our season bleeds into spring and fall. With the exception of the Rolex 24 at Daytona weekend we actually have a neat, tightly packed race season. The current date of the Rolex 24 was finalized because it is the kickoff to Daytona Speedweeks. It is the start of two straight weeks of racing action at Daytona International Speedway, culminating in Nascar’s Daytona 500.

So the benefits of this are that the world of sports cars and road racing is introduced to many Nascar fans that otherwise would have no exposure to it. But the biggest benefit of having the race so early in the year is that no other racing has started anywhere in the world yet. This means top drivers from all over come to race in the Rolex 24 just for the experience and to have a good time. There are top drivers from Nascar, Indy cars, ex-Formula 1 guys, and big names from Europe. This helps to draw fans to watch their favorite drivers compete in cars they don’t usually drive. I guess you see the recurring theme here, trying to draw in fans. That is the main issue with road racing, there are not’t that many people who know what it is. Much less follow it.

As we in road racing try to grow our fan base, crazy things will be done. Like have a race in January and mess up the whole season. As a driver I like having the season opener so soon, it forces teams to make quick decisions. This helps to not have months of unknowns and unanswered questions about the upcoming season. But, I’m sure it make life hard on teams that have the hurry in the off season to get equipment ready for the next year.

I hope the lack of updates and information on my site doesn't turn you off, just two more weeks and the Daytona race will be on TV. Then just a month more and Homestead will be upon us, and the season will be in full swing. Keep checking back, I love seeing the number of visitors on my site increase. Since January 19th (when I started tracking stats on my site) I have had 873 visits to my site. Or, if you like big numbers: 17,964 hits. Thanks for supporting me, I hope I can spread some the enjoyment I get out of racing to you guys too.
