Testing at Daytona Day 1
Date: 1/4/2007 Event: Daytona Test Days

First day of the official pre-season for the Koni Challenge Series. I’m down in Daytona with Kensai Racing Team- just arrived this morning to the track and met the team. I actually knew some of the guys from other teams. Kensai redesigned their paint scheme on the cars – very bright orange in color- easy to spot. Actually looks pretty good though.

Travis, my co-driver went out first in the session. It was the first time our car had been driven at all. The Kensai guys made an educated guess on the setup for the car- surprisingly good. Travis turned some quick laps and then handed it over to me where I also turned some quick ones. When the session was over we were the 3rd fastest time. Not bad, for a car with a guess of a setup on it.

We made some adjustments to the shocks started session 2. The car was very good; I went out first and came in for a couple of pit stops to further adjust shock settings. A little excitement happened when heading into the chicane on the back straight at Daytona (over 140 mph)- the Anti-Lock brakes failed on my car. So when I hit the brakes the front tires unexpectedly locked up. Needless to say it ruined the tires- I had to come in for a quick tire change- catastrophe avoided. Still working on set up and Travis decided to let me just do the entire session to work on the car, just taking it easy. After messing with the shocks a bit we decided that bigger changes were needed than could be quickly made in pit lane, so we brought the car in early to wait til tomorrow.

I was pretty happy with the car, but I didn't realize just how good it was until I got out and the crew told me my lap time. I had turned the fastest lap time all day. Headed back tomorrow morning to see what else we can do with the car. Hopefully it just gets better and better. Oh, yea the anti-lock brake failure has been fixed- a speed sensor had fallen off and was easily attached back. Make sure to check back tomorrow, hopefully I'll have more good news!
